Curt Britt started out the 2004 racing series in a familiar position: on top.

Fresh off last year's track championship, the Cornelia resident led wire-to-wire to win the Trucks race at Lanier National Speedway.

"I'm really lucky to have a good team," he said. "I was just trying to run smooth laps."

Britt was the pole-sitter and never let up the entire race. As the race was completing its second turn, the field had to avoid an accident on Turn 3. The race resumed after a 10-minute delay and Britt held onto his lead through lap 5, where another caution flag delayed the race.

The Ace Hardware team continued to set the pace, lapping several cars, while the rest of the pack rubbed paint jobs around the oval track. When the checkered flag dropped, Britt was ahead of Rob Young by several truck lengths.

"I've helped Rob with his truck," Britt said. "I'm glad to have trucks I work with finish either behind me or in front of me."

Being able to avoid the accidents helped Britt secure his first win of the season. Spotter David Rosenberg knows that was only part of the reason the defending champion was victorious.

"We changed a few things in the off-season and the truck has been driving great," Rosenberg said. "Curt is just a heck of a driver, too."

Dwayne Buggay capitalized on a mistake to win the Pro Late Model race.

"I was pretty nervous," said Buggay, who started in fifth place. "In a 50-lap race, you have to get up on the steering wheel. I filled up his mirror and waited for him to make a mistake."

Buggay, who had the fastest qualifying time on the Ø-mile track, chased Gainesville's Tony Bennett down.

On lap 43, Buggay bumped Bennett before taking the lead on Turn 4.

NOTES: Eric Simpson went wire-to-wire to win the Legends Semi-Pro race the evening's first feature race.

The Pro & Masters Division had two caution flags before Chris Dilbeck took the checkered flag. Chad Hoop-augh won the shortened Factory Four race after six caution flags were waved.

Steve Hill of Jefferson fell behind early in the Modified Ministock before taking the lead on Turn 3 on lap 16 for the win. The Sportsman winner was Travis Terry.
